The project
Seal No To Drugs was developed by final-year students from Nanyang Polytechnic’s School of Interactive and Digital Media in collaboration with the Central Narcotics Bureau. The game uses augmented reality to bring its drug-education message into the player’s surroundings. CNB records its launch at the Workplan Seminar in May 2019 and its release on iOS and Android.
My contribution
I was responsible for the game’s ScriptableObject architecture in Unity, and contributed to some of its augmented reality and multiplayer features. These were my areas within the team’s wider project; the visual assets, complete feature set and public recognition reflect the work of the team. The original source repository is no longer accessible; these responsibilities are described from my recollection.
Learning through play
The game introduces heroin, methamphetamine and cannabis through gameplay, with different effects representing the harms of drug abuse. CNB describes experiences involving altered perception, balance and coordination. The educational goal was to make the consequences tangible through interaction, rather than relying only on written information.
Recognition and public launch
The project was a finalist in the Game of the Year — Mobile category at the Rookie Awards 2019. It was also selected for the Indie Prize China showcase in November 2019. CNB’s Annual Bulletin 2019 documents both its public launch and the Indie Prize selection, with photographs of the game being demonstrated.
From the public record
Original photographs recovered from CNB’s Annual Bulletin 2019, printed page 39, showing the game and public demonstrations.
